Improving preparedness in Europe through risk communication and community-based approaches
The POP-ALERT and TACTIC final conference will bring together researchers and practitioners interested in community preparedness from across Europe. The conference seeks to explore the following issues:

  • Getting communities ready to prepare: is preparedness possible for all types of hazard and what shapes communities’ preparedness?
  • Using and evaluating risk communication to influence preparedness: What works and what does not (under what kind of contexts)?
  • Perspectives of preparedness: views from the field
  • Using novel tools to improve preparedness and alerting
  • Collaborating for preparedness: bringing scientific and practical perspectives of preparedness together

  • Philippe Quevauviller (European Commission): The impact of such projects in the conext of EU activities
  • Maria Telhado (Civil Protection Department, Municipality of Lisbon): Description of the POP-ALERT Pilot Project in Lisbon
  • Jean-Christophe Bourdin (Northern Corsica Fire Department): Novel technologies in Corsica, the SDIS mobile app
  • Nikos Moustakidis (Greek Centre for Security Studies): Results of the intercultural communication analysis and recommendations
  • Christoph Oberacker (Bavarian Environment Agency, Germany): Lessons learned from the 2013 flood in Bavaria and outline of a new flood risk communication strategy
  • Koos van der Helm (Centric): the Dutch Population Dashboard for Environmental hazards and potential synergies with POP-ALERT
  • Karin Metz and Sawyer Baker (Global Disaster Preparedness Centre, United States): A global perspective on preparedness
  • Benoit Ramacker (Belgian Crisis Center): Communicating on terrorism during November 2015

What: 2nd Expert Group Meeting (Invitation Only)
Where: Brussels, Belgium
When: 14 April 2015

The Expert Group Meeting will take place the day before our annual Stakeholder Forum Workshop and will gather European and non-European experts in crisis communication and the use of new and traditional media for preparedness and awareness raising activities.

During this meeting, participants will discuss the best ways of communicating with the population in case of a crisis or disaster, the successful ways of formulating a message and how to spread the message to different communities to ensure a wide reach. This interactive event will invite participants to share their experiences and identify opportunities presented by the different communication channels and tools available.

What: POP-ALERT 1st Expert Group Meeting
Where: Brussels, Belgium
When: 25 November 2014

The event will gather public authorities, first responders, NGOs and trainers who will discuss and share their experiences in training populations to be prepared in case of a crisis, community preparedness schemes and methods for alarming and reaching citizens when there is a crisis.

What: 2nd Stakeholder Forum Workshop
Where: Brussels, Belgium
When: 15 April 2015

The event will present the results of the first wave of activities implemented by the POP-ALERT team since the start of the projects. A wide range of stakeholders in the field of crisis and disaster management will be invited to listen to the presentations and participate to debates and panels.

The event will discuss and present the following:

  • Presentation of the results of our behavioural analysis with our identified EU priorities, pictograms and common terms and the key social triggers for preparedness;
  • Presentation of the practices identified in terms of community preparedness programmes, social networking and communication channels between first responders and citizens;
  • A discussion on how to use social media, mobile apps and online platforms to spread messages to different community groups.
